Lal Kila or red fort was built by fifth Mughal emperor Shah Jahan in 1639 AD. This took almost 8 and half years to complete. He shifted his capital from Agra to Delhi. The Lal Kila is made of red sandstone. it is major tourist attraction. The fort was designated as UNESCO world heritage in 2007. On 15 august 1947 Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru hoisted the flag of Independence at the Lahori gate of red fort.
